The standard-setting figure establishes Fernández as the fourth-most costly footballer in global history and sets a new milestone for the highest fee ever commanded by an Argentine player. Chelsea originally bought the World Cup winner from Benfica in January 2023 for $131 million, turning a profit after three years and 170 competitive appearances that yielded 31 goals and 30 assists for the West London side.

The transfer enables Fernández to link back up with manager Enzo Maresca, under whom he played some of his best football at Stamford Bridge before the Italian strategist took charge at Etihad Stadium. Manchester City targeted the midfielder to bolster its engine room following high-profile departures earlier in the window, completing a marquee summer spending spree for the reigning Premier League contenders.

Chelsea progressed the negotiations after entering late talks for potential positional replacements to fill the void left in their tactical setup.
