The Vegas Golden Knights strengthened their forward depth Thursday by acquiring veteran center Nic Dowd from the Washington Capitals, in a trade aimed at reinforcing their lineup ahead of the NHL trade deadline.

In return, Washington received goaltending prospect Jesper Vikman along with a third-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft and a second-round selection in 2029.

The Capitals announced the deal on X: “The Washington Capitals have acquired a second-round pick in the 2029 NHL Draft, a third-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft (originally from San Jose) and goaltender Jesper Vikman from the Vegas Golden Knights for forward Nic Dowd.”

Dowd, 35, has recorded four goals and 12 assists in 55 games this season while serving as a key defensive center for the Capitals. The 11-year NHL veteran anchored Washington’s fourth line and led the team’s forwards in penalty-killing time. Known for his defensive reliability, he also ranked among the team leaders in blocked shots and began nearly three-quarters of his shifts in the defensive zone.

Washington Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery said: “Really difficult day for the organization, our team, players, staff. Nic Dowd being traded after seven years… He’s meant a lot to this team. He’s meant a lot to this community, him and his family. He’ll be missed. It’s one of the unfortunate parts of this business, saying goodbye to good people.”

Vegas hopes Dowd will stabilize its bottom-six center depth and anchor the fourth line. The move comes as the team deals with injuries, including captain Mark Stone being placed on injured reserve, while William Karlsson and Brett Howden remain on long-term injured reserve. Those absences have forced lineup adjustments, even shifting winger Mitch Marner to center for much of the season.

Dowd is in the first season of a two-year contract carrying a $3 million annual cap hit, providing Vegas with cost certainty as several of its forwards are approaching unrestricted free agency. Vegas has also been reshaping its fourth line after recently acquiring winger Cole Smith from the Nashville Predators.

Vikman, originally selected by Vegas in the fifth round of the 2020 NHL Draft, is in his third professional season and has played with the Henderson Silver Knights in the AHL, where he continues developing as a positional goaltender with strong raw ability.
